Studies on the Quantitative Growth Analysis in Snap Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Abstract
This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations for improving the yield, quality and cultural environments through understanding biomass production balance in snap bean. Two snap been cultivars with different characteristics were used in quantitative growth analysis. The results are summarized as follows:
1. Specific growth rate (SGR) for whole plant of dwarf red cranberry and boston favorite cultivars showed rapid increase during 11¡20 days, and then reached to the maximum during 21¡30 days after sowing. The second maximum in dwarf red cranberry cultivar was shown during 51¡60 days after sowing, but that of Boston favorite cultivar was uncertain.
2. SGR for stem weight of both cultivars showed the maxima during 21¡30 days and 51¡60 days after sowing, and also those for leaf weight, root weight, fruit weight and leaf area showed similar tendencies.
3. Changes in specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) were not remarkable in both cultivars. Leaf weight ratio (LWR) showed the maximum during 21¡30 days after sowing and that period was in accord with those of whole plant weight and stem Wight.
4. Unit leaf area rates (ULAR) and unit leaf weight rates (ULWR) of both cultivars showed similar tendencies, and also reached to the maximum during 11¡20 days and to the minimum during 61¡70 days after sowing.
5. Surplus weights (S) of both cultivars showed the first maxima during 31¡40 days and the second maxima during 61¡70 days after sowing. The second maximum period of surplus weight was in accord with the maximum specific growth rate of fruit seed.
6. Growth pattern of dwarf red cranberry and Boston favorite cutivars was similar, but in dwarf red cranberry cultivars, growth during early stage was more vigorous and the fruit weight was higher as compared with Boston favorite cultivar.
